Jane Green’s book picks

Known for originating the chick lit genre, Jane Green is the author of 19 novels, including 17 New York Times bestsellers, one cookbook, and various short stories. She no longer writes chick lit, but her passion for bringing women together over the love of a shared story led her to recently launch the Jane Green Book Club. “It’s about community, connection, and looking after each other. All in the name of a good book,” she writes on her blog.

Here are a few of her favorite titles, along with the first selections for her club members.

Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta

Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta

Her first book club pick is Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta, the bestselling author of Little Children and The Leftovers. His latest novel tells the story of a new empty-nester who becomes obsessed with an “adult” website, and finds her sleepy, suburban existence sleepy no more. Before long, Eve’s online fixations begin to spill over into real life, revealing new romantic possibilities that threaten to upend her quiet suburban existence.

Meanwhile, miles away at the state college, Eve’s son Brendan discovers that life on campus isn’t quite what he’d imagined. As the New England autumn turns cold, both mother and son find themselves enmeshed in morally fraught situations that come to a head on one fateful November night.

Middle-aged Portia Nathan has avoided the past, hiding behind her busy career as a Princeton University admissions officer, a job she compares to “building a better fruit basket” while helping her institution pluck the most exotic specimens. Her personal life is permanently on hold because of a traumatic incident from her own college years. When she’s forced to confront a painful secret, she finds herself in a predicament that may put her career at risk.

Admission is the Jane Green Book Club’s December pick.

The Arrangement by Sarah Dunn

The Arrangement by Sarah Dunn

Lucy and Owen are ambitious New Yorkers, living in a historic home with their autistic son and 17 chickens. Life is picture-perfect. But when friends at a wine-soaked dinner party reveal they’ve made their marriage open, sensible Lucy suddenly becomes intrigued. When an affair with a man in the city begins to seem more enticing than her happily ever life, she finds herself at a crossroads and must make a decision.

“It is such a cleverly observed, wickedly accurate book, a cautionary tale to all those happily married midlifers who are bored with contentment and think it might be fine to each have a brief time in the greener grass.” – Jane Green

Hourglass by Dani Shapiro

Hourglass by Dani Shapiro

Hourglass is an inquiry into how marriage is transformed by time, abraded, strengthened, shaped in miraculous and sometimes terrifying ways by accident and experience. Author Dani Shapiro courageously and honestly opens the door to her house, her marriage, and her heart, and invites readers into her own marital reckoning, as she confronts her dreams and realities.

When Theresa ends up pregnant, Nora is forced to come up with a plan—a decision with repercussions they are both far too young to understand.
