There’s something so fulfilling about seeing beloved characters come to life on the silver screen and this past year we were privileged to get so many fascinating adaptions. From TJR’s Daisy Jones and the Six, Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry to Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me it was a banner year for cinephiles and bibliophiles alike. Thankfully, there are plenty more book-to-screen adaptions planned for 2024 featuring star-studded casts and scintillating plotlines that are sure to leave their mark on cinematic history. Get your popcorn ready for the most anticipated adaptions of 2024.

The Three-Body Problem

The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu

The first book in the internationally renowned series by Chinese science fiction author Cixin Liu will make its television debut on Netflix in January. The alien invasion novel set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution is said to be the “War of the Worlds for the 21st century.”

Bridgerton: Season 3 based on the book Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Dearest Readers, the ton is abuzz with excitement… It’s official, Bridgerton season 3 is coming to Netflix in 2024 and will follow the love story of Penelope and Colin!  Netflix released the first photos of the season and the internet couldn’t contain the excitement. I mean, who doesn’t love a good friends-to-lovers trope? Nicole Coughlan and Luke Newton play Penelope and Colin and Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley will also be reprising their roles as Anthony and Kate.

The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee

The much-anticipated adaptation of Janice Y. K. Lee’s novel is coming to Prime Video. Re-titled Expats, the movie stars Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo, Brian Tee, and Jack Huston. The story centers around three women, struggling with their roles as a recent graduate, a wife struggling with infertility and a mother grappling with loss. A book club favorite of 2016, we suspect this show will give us feelings similar to shows like Big, Little Lies.

Argyle

Argyle by Elly Conway

This incredibly unusual movie is inspired by a book releasing just one month before the movie comes out. Featuring a star-studded cast including Henry Cavil, Bryce Dallas Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Cena. The adaptation gets even more meta (and interesting) as the author is a character in the movie.

Force of Nature: Dry 2 based on the novel by Jane Harper

Modern mystery fans this one is for you. Federal agent Aaron Faulk is headed to the big screen. This film adaption of Jane Harper’s thrilling Australian mystery is hitting cinemas on February 8th of next year. Eric Bana plays Agent Faulk as he undertakes a chilling missing persons case: five women went on a corporate retreat and only four returned.

It Ends With Us  based on the novel by Colleen Hoover

Fans of Colleen Hoover rejoice, It Ends with Us finally has a release date! Despite controversial costume and casting opinions, the cast and crew of this movie have persevered and the film is slated to release in theaters on February 9th 2024. The film will follow Lily Bloom (played by Blake Lively) as she navigates a tumultuous relationship with Ryle (Justin Baladoni) and the reappearance of her first love Atlas (Brandon Sklenar).

 

Dune: Part Two  based on the novel by  Frank Herbert

The next installment of the epic sci-fi fantasy Dune is set to premiere in theaters on March 15th, 2024. It features a star-studded cast including Timotee Chalamett,  Zendaya,  Austin Butler, and Florence Pugh. The film will follow Paul Atredies (Chalamet) as he fights for revenge alongside the Fremen and grapples with the immense implications of his growing power.

This beloved children’s book in which young Harold creates his own world with a purple crayon, is being adapted into a film. Not much is known about the plot of the film yet but the cast includes Zooey Deschanel and Zachery Levi and should be released in late 2024.

Wicked The Musical: Part I based on the book by Gregory Maguire

From book to stage to screen, the story of Elphaba and Glinda has been captivating audiences since 1995. The first in a two-part movie series will premiere November 27th, 2024, and will feature Cynthia Erivo in the titular role of Elphaba and Ariana Grande as the kind but aloof Glinda. The story follows the girls meeting and how their roles in each other’s lives shaped the world around them.

The Uglies based on the book by Scott Westerfield

Netflix has been working on this film adaption of the dystopian novel, since 2021 and rumor has it that it will be released in 2024 as a Netflix exclusive. The film will star Joey King and Chase Stokes and is set in a society where natural looks are abhorred and plastic surgery is a mandatory right of passage.

We Were The Lucky Ones based on the novel by Georgia Hunter

Hulu is working on adapting Hunter’s inspiringly human story into a TV miniseries set to air in late 2024 starring Joey King and Logan Lerman. This historical drama series follows the Kurcs, a Jewish family living in Poland in 1939. When the war scatters the family throughout the world, each must fight to survive during a time when everything is against them.

The Spiderwick Chronicles based on the book series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black.

The Roku channel snagged the rights to The Spiderwick Chronicles and is hard at work adapting the beloved children’s books into a TV series. The series will premiere in early 2024 and will follow The Grace family’s misadventures as they unlock secrets to the fantastical world around them.

The Sympathizer based on the book by Viet Thanh Nguyen

HBO is adapting the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen into a TV miniseries set to premiere late 2o24. The show is a historical drama/comedy that follows the Captain, a young Vietnamese man sent to America to spy for the Vietcong in the final days of the war in Vietnam.

We are excited for all the adaptations coming, but here’s hoping for a few surprise announcements on current projects underway like The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, literally ANY Emily Henry adaptation and the Apple TV+ series Dark Matter, based on Blake Crouch’s novel.
