Lisa Taddeo’s bestselling nonfiction book, Three Women, is about to go from page to screen with a series adaptation dropping on September 13 on Starz. In it, we meet Maggie, Lina, and Sloane. Three very different women, each with their own unique experiences that teach the audience one thing; Women’s sex lives are often seen through a scandalous and judgmental lens, when they are much more complicated than many people know.
This candid and gripping book captivated audiences with its raw depictions of desire and sensuality in women’s lives and will continue to do so in its upcoming 10-episode adaptation. This story’s large cast of characters gives everyone someone to root for like our leading ladies played by Betty Gilpin as Lina, DeWanda Wise as Sloane, and Gabrielle Creevy as Maggie.
This story of Three Women follows four in the adaptation; Lina and her struggles with her husband’s apathy, refusing to even kiss her, leading her into the arms of an old flame. Sloane, a glamourous housewife, faces judgment from everyone about her and her husband’s sex life, including all the other men and women they let in their bedroom, and Maggie, whose first experience with love is twisted by her married English teacher and dredged back up years later when he is up for a Teacher Of The Year award. The fourth story is Gia’s, played by Shailene Woodley. She is a struggling journalist who travels across America for inspiration, a breakthrough, anything to help her writing career. Instead she finds these women and their powerful stories. Whether or not it was a good decision to include the author in the story is a hot subject for debate. Gia helps tie the stories together and show the important reporting work Taddeo did for this novel. The series beautifully highlights the messy, all-encompassing, and beautiful lives of real women everywhere.
Three Women by Lisa Taddeo
Reporter and author Lisa Taddeo follows the story of three vastly different women, all with one thing in common. Sex. Each woman in Taddeo’s book has a compelling story that shines a light on the sex-lives of women across America, a topic that is often kept behind closed doors. Lina is a mother of two and a wife to man that no longer loves her and refuses her advances. Their dispassionate relationship leads her into the arms of her high school boyfriend, and the spark is still as strong as it was years ago. Another woman, Sloane comes to an agreement with her husband that they can invite anyone they want into their bedroom, but only if he gets to watch. This gets extra dicey when Sloane starts to fall for another man. And lastly, there is Maggie, a young waitress whose rendezvous from years ago with her high school English teacher are exposed to everyone in their small town.
