Every marriage has its obstacles, but some are messier than others. The Roses, a reimagining of the 1989 film The War of the Roses and Warren Adler’s 1981 novel of the same title, takes dysfunctional marriage to the next level. Set to premiere in theatres on August 29, this film promises endless hijinks while also delving into the darkest parts of marriage and human nature.

The film follows Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Olivia Colman) at a pivotal point in their lives. Though their marriage seems perfect from the outside, resentment brews under the surface. Ivy’s cooking is finally garnering outside attention while Theo’s job as an architect crumbles to dust. When Ivy asks for a divorce, Theo agrees under one condition: he gets to keep their custom-built house. But Ivy wants to take everything, and the two embark on a series of shocking, devious antics to force each other into submission.

The Roses also boasts a vibrant supporting cast, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg and SNL comedian Kate McKinnon playing friends of Theo and Ivy. Allison Janey, known for her roles in acclaimed films like 10 Things I Hate About You and I, Tonya, will also appear as Ivy’s lawyer.

Ahead of the movie’s release, Adler’s iconic novel has been reissued with a redesigned cover, making it the perfect time to dive into this perennial, darkly humorous narrative of a turbulent divorce.
