Guest Editor Caz Frear is not only one of our favorite crime writers, but she’s also a major book lover. We caught up with Caz to find out what some of her favorite reads of all time are, and it turns out some of these books are our favorites too! Find out what Caz Frear, the author of Stone Cold Heart, reads.
The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer
I recommend this book to everyone. It’s narrated by 19-year-old Matt, who tells the story of his descent into mental illness following the accidental death of his younger brother several years before. It’s hard to believe but this is such an uplifting, heartwarming story, despite its desperately sad premise. Funny, too. Matt’s take on the world is offbeat, yet so compassionate, and I defy anyone not to be moved by this extraordinary young man’s journey back to acceptance (if not quite happiness).
In the Woods by Tana French
Rob Ryan and his partner Cassie Maddox are tasked with solving the murder of a 12-year-old Dublin girl while Rob must also confront the devastating events of his past – namely the disappearance of his two best friends in 1984; a fate Rob somehow inexplicably escaped. French’s debut is the original and best mystery. A masterclass in everything – plot, prose, suspense, characterization.
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
Gone Girl gets all the glory but I absolutely love Gillian Flynn’s first novel about a crime journalist returning to her hometown (and hugely dysfunctional family) to report on the murder of two young girls. Sharp Objects is utterly bleak and disturbing, but the wry observations of the main character, Camille, totally shine through.
Rachel’s Holiday by Marian Keyes
There’s no one better than Marian Keyes at taking serious issues and applying a wry, light touch so that you’re crying one minute and laughing the next. Rachel’s Holiday is the story of one woman’s journey through addiction to redemption, and it features a supporting cast of fellow lost souls who will stay in your thoughts long after reading.
