Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of those authors who will write an immersive story that sticks with you long after the final chapter. From cover to cover, you’re lost in the world she created with characters you won’t ever forget about. Some may even wonder what these characters are up to in their lives after the book is finished. What are they watching and reading and what are their lives like now? Like catching up with an old friend, here are some books we think are on the nightstands of your favorite TJR characters!
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo featuring Evelyn Hugo and Celia St. James
Oh, Evelyn. In The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Evelyn is the fascinating and emotionally complex woman who does whatever it takes to survive in a male-dominated world that leads her to become the most popular movie star and one of the most powerful women in the world. This novel is told through Evelyn’s words as she reaches stardom and the seven husbands that were along for the ride. What better character to connect with than Circe in the title-novel by Madeline Miller? Circe is a retelling of a myth from the perspective of an exiled woman, Circe. Following the Greek goddess from her birth to exile and the powerful journey in which she becomes a witch. I would like to believe Evelyn would find comfort and connect in a story about the journey of a woman who goes from underestimated to powerful.
Celia St. James, on the other hand, is a hopeless romantic who is no stranger to heartbreak. The glamorous Celia would completely devour Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman. Celia would connect with her own experience of hidden love and identity in which two characters fall in love and form a secret relationship. Teenage Elio is spending the summer with his family in Italy when a handsome doctoral student, Oliver, arrives to work as an intern for Elio’s father. Soon the two begin to have feelings for one another over on summer that will change both of their lives.
Malibu Rising featuring Nina Riva and Mick Riva
Nina Riva is the heart of Malibu Rising, the novel featuring the children of infamous musician Mick Riva, a polarizing character in the world of TJR! Nina is not only grounded, but the true emotional anchor of the family. What book would Nina be kicking her feet over and enjoying? The deeply emotional and mysterious Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, of course. Nina would definitely connect with Kya in this tale of loss, survival, and finding peace in nature. This coming-of-age tale combined with a mystery is about Kya, a young woman who is raised in the marshlands in the south. When a popular man in town is found dead and linked to Kya, she becomes the prime suspect in his murder.
Not that Mick Riva would ever pick up a book (unless he was in it) but if he were, I’d like to imagine Mick would fall in love with the luxurious world of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Mick and Jay Gatbsy would be two characters who have so much in common from building dreams on charm and good looks all while being driven by their egos. In this book, Jay Gatbsy is a self-made millionaire who is infatuated with the beautiful Daisy Buchanan all while throwing the most lavish parties on Long Island.
Daisy Jones & the Six featuring Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne
Daisy Jones is the fierce and complicated rock star from Daisy Jones & the Six who finds herself in love with rock ‘n’ roll and soon finds herself in the path of The Six, a band led by Billy Dunne. A lover of lyrics and poetry, Daisy would love I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. In this story about identity, trauma, and resilience, Daisy would not only connect with the plot but also validate some things about her life. In this book, a young girl named Maya is attacked by a man and the attack haunts her for a lifetime as the book chronicles her life from ages 3 to 16.
The brooding Billy Dunne on the other hand, is not only ambitious but also emotionally intense. Billy constantly is battling his personal responsibilities and his desires as an artist. At the top of his TBR would be A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. In this one, Ove is an elderly man who lives alone, mad at the world and still grieving the loss of his wife. When he strikes up a friendship with a young family who moves next door, his outlook on life begins to change. Billy would connect with a character who has been hardened by life but received a second chance.
Carrie Soto is Back featuring Carrie Soto and Nick Soto
Carrie Soto is the determined and complex main character of Carrie Soto is Back who has just made the decision to come out of retirement in the competitive world of tennis to reclaim her record. In between grueling training, Carrie would definitely wind down with The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Carrie could identify with the flawed and legendary Achilles in this emotional read. Told from the perspective of Patroclus, Achilles’ friend and lover, this is the story about love as the Greek army raids the Trojans and Achilles leaves his lover Patroclus to fight alone.
Carrie’s father, Javier Soto is a disciplined former tennis pro who is also Carrie’s coach. In his downtime, Javier would enjoy The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach as he would connect with the pressure of succeeding, what legacy really means, and personal growth. In this story, Henry Skrimshander is a college baseball star who just changed the lives of five people after a terrible throw. As the season approaches its final game, the five are forced to deal with their personal lives and help one another.
Atmosphere featuring Joan Goodwin
Joan Goodwin is our physics and astronomy professor who has the chance to be one of the first women scientists to join the NASA space shuttle program in 1980. Forming unlikely friendships with the other candidates going to space, she finds a passion and love she never thought imaginable. What book is Joan taking to space? Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid of course! In this novel, Emira Tucker is a young Black woman who is accused of kidnapping a woman’s child at a supermarket. Now the woman is looking to make things right at the same time as a video goes viral of the incident. This is the perfect book for Joan to enjoy that deals with complicated relationships as well as social commentary and humor.
