Paul Atreides may have conquered Arrakis, defeated House Harkonnen and seized the Imperial throne, but his story is far from over. Denis Villeneuve is returning to the desert one final time for Dune: Part Three, a darker adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah that will confront the devastating consequences of Paul’s rise to power. Here is everything we know about Dune: Part Three.
Trailer
The final trailer reveals a much darker Paul Atreides nearly two decades after the ending of Dune: Part Two. Now ruling the Imperium as a ruthless conqueror, Paul faces rebellions, political betrayals and a growing conspiracy determined to remove him from power.
Release Date
Dune: Part Three premieres in theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026, with its international rollout beginning December 16.
The film was created specifically for the largest screen possible, with portions captured using IMAX film cameras and more than an hour expected to appear in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio. The reported two-hour-and-twenty-minute movie will conclude Villeneuve’s time directing the Dune franchise, although another filmmaker could eventually continue adapting Herbert’s later novels.

What Is Dune: Part Three About?
Dune: Part Three follows Paul Atreides nearly two decades after he seized control of the Imperium and unleashed a devastating holy war. As a powerful conspiracy forms to overthrow him, Paul must confront the consequences of his reign, the return of old allies and his complicated relationship with Chani. Based primarily on Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah, the film brings Paul’s journey to a dark and emotional conclusion.
How Closely Does the Adaptation Follow Dune Messiah?
Dune: Part Three keeps the novel’s central ideas, including the conspiracy against Paul, Duncan Idaho’s return and the consequences of Paul’s rise to power. However, the movie extends the book’s 12-year time jump to approximately 17 years and appears to give Chani a much larger role in the rebellion against Paul. In the novel, she remains loyal to him throughout his reign.
The film also introduces older versions of Paul and Chani’s twins, Leto II and Ghanima, even though they are not born until the end of Dune: Messiah. This suggests the adaptation may change their timeline or include material from Children of Dune. With Lady Jessica and Gurney Halleck also returning, viewers can expect a more action-driven interpretation that preserves Herbert’s warning about power while taking several creative liberties with the story.
